  • Fragment from a military diary of lieutenant 522nd Infantry Regiment (297th Infantry Division) Circumscribed period January, 1943. The text in some places is damaged and is badly read, therefore there are miss in the text. The military diary has awarded Frank Gulin.

      6. Mittwoch
      [2nd half of entry started on 5. Dienstag]
      Der Fuhrer hat verstarkten
      Einsatz[?] der "Ju" befohlen.

      < The Fuhrer has ordered increased missions by the "Ju" >

      7. Donnerstag
      Gluckwunsche zur Beforderung vom
      General.
      Es fallt wieder ein Pferd[?] zusammen und blei-
      ben mir nur noch 3.

      < Congratulations from the General on being promoted.
      Another horse has collapsed, and only three remain to me. >

      8. Freitag
      Betrunkene Russen in den Graben (?)
      uns. Stuka sind angefordert, kommen nicht.
      Die Tages Befehl[?] : Neuer Kampfabschnitt steht bevor.
      Wir mussen (?) konnen durchhalten.
      (?) (?) 5 Tage (?) (?) (?) .
      (?) verwundet!

      us. Stukas requested, don't come.
      Order of the Day: A new sector of combat is upon us.

      9. Sonnabend
      Neue russ. Truppen rucken vor
      und in die Stellungen, sehr viele Betrunkene
      davon[?]

      In der Nacht kommt fdl. Sto?trupp auf[?]
      Bunker (?) u. wird abgeschmiert.
      Die ganze Nacht uber Geschrei beim Feind.

      [ emplacements ], very many of them drunk.

      At night enemy assault troops [?] appear
      bunker (?) and are wiped out.
      Screaming among the enemy throughout the night.>


      10. Sonntag
      600 soll Angriff mit Feuervorbereitung.
      Angriffe werden abgewehrt. 14 eigene
      Gefallene u. 11 Verwundete (vom Feind Kopf[?]….
      Geld[?] ). Bunker (?) wird im Gegensto? ge-
      nommen. Dann vom Feind wieder besetzt.
      Beim Gegensto? werde ich verwundet. (?)
      Furstenberger fallt. Bunker kann nicht
      mehr genommen werden. (?)
      Stangl ubernimmt die Kompanie. Lt. Wolf soll
      Gegensto? fuhren.

      < At 0600 shall be an attack with prep. fire.
      Attacks are warded off. 14 own
      killed and 11 wounded. (of the enemy Head[?]
      money[?] ). Bunker (?) taken in a counter-
      attack. Then occupied once again by the enemy.
      During the counterattack I am wounded. (?)
      Furstenberger falls. Bunker can not be
      < taken again. (?) Stangl takes over the company. Lt. Wolf
      is to lead the counterattack.


      11. Montag
      500 gehe ich zum Verbandsplatz. Alle sehr
      freundlich. Bei (?) (?) wasche ich mich. Dann
      mit Sanka[?] zum H.V.P. Dort alles uberfullt.
      (?) sehr kalt uber nacht.

      0500 I go to the aid station. All very friendly. At (?) (?) I
      wash, then with Sanka [?] to the Main Aid Station. There
      everything overfull. (?) Very cold over night. >


      12. Dienstag
      (?) verbunden und (?)
      dann zur St. (Abt.) wo ich einige Tage
      (?) soll. Es (?) eine grimmige Kalte.

      several days. A bitter cold (?). >


      13. Mittwoch
      Noch bei (?) Abt. (?)
      Karpovka ist geraumt.

      Karpovka is evacuated. >


      14. Donnerstag
      M[?] (?) um 700 ab.
      Wir fahren 1500 vom H.V.P. ab mit Oblt.(?) (?) .
      H.V.Pl. werden geraumt im (?) Feuer.
      Ein furchtbares Bild ist des verwundete schreien.
      Erfrorene liegen an der Stra?e.
      Um 2200 Ankunft in Gumrak bei Kr. Sam. St.
      ubernachtet. Alles uberfullt.

      We depart from the Main Aid Station at 1500 with 1LT (?)
      A horrific picture is of the wounded screaming. Frozen
      Bodies lie on the street.
      Arrival Gumrak at 2200 at Kr. Sam. St.[?] . >

      15. Freitag
      Mit Sanker[?] zum Feldlaz. 160 (mot.)
      Sehr schlechte Unterkunft. Dauernde fdl.* Flieger-
      angriffe.

      Very poor shelter. Continuous enemy air
      attacks. >

      16. Sonnabend
      Den ganzen Tag gelegen. Immer wieder fdl.
      Fliegerangriffe.
      Flugplatz geraumt.

      on.
      Airfield evacuated. >


      17. Sonntag
      Mal wieder Gewehrfeuer[?] u. (?).
      Dauernde fdl. Fliegerangriffe in Massen[?].
      Panzerspitze soll Karpovka erreichen (?) haben und
      soll fruh[?] den Ring aufbrechen.
      Tolles Mittagessen.
      Lt. H[?] v. 376 (?) (?) (?) ins Lazarett. Im [?] ist noch
      immer furchtbare Bilder. Tote im LKW u. Stra?e.

      < Once again gunfire[?] and (?).
      Unremitting enemy air attacks in mass[?].
      Panzer spearhead should have reached Karpovka and
      should break out of the ring early[?].
      Great noon meal.
      Lt. H? of 376 I. D[?] (?) into the Lazarett. In Gumrak[?] are still
      dreadful pictures. Dead in the LKW [Lastkraftwagen - truck] and street. >

      Zur (?) (?) D. P.V.A. Mein Bruder ist bei Marinowka verwundet
      worden.
      Stabss[?] Butber[?] ist ein alter Kamerad meines Bruders.
